Telecom Italia approves KKR’s €18.8 billion fixed infra acquisition 

On Sunday, Telecom Italia (TIM) approved the sale of its fixed-line network to US-based equity firm KKR for €18.8 billion. The fixed-line business will be spun into a new entity named NetCo.    

TIM’s board of directors met from 3–5th November to examine the binding offer that was submitted by KKR back in October. Eleven of the board’s fourteen members approved the acquisition.  

Rogers prepares to lock out unionised workers ahead of strike

Having been in negotiations since February, two months ago around 300 former Shaw technicians voted 99.6% in favour of a striking over fears of job security, saying that they were increasingly being replaced by contractors.

“It’s not like the work has disappeared,” said Jayson Little, spokesperson for the United Steelworkers union, which represents the workers. “They’ve just started to rely more and more on contractors to do that work.”

BT sees profit rise in half-year results 

BT, Britain’s largest broadband and mobile provider, has today published its half-year results, revealing revenues of £10.4 billion and profits of over £1 billion. 

Adjusted EBITDA rose 6% to £4.1 billion (up 4% on a pro forma basis), and profit before tax increased 29 % to £1.1 billion.

Colt acquires Lumen EMEA for $1.8 billion

Digital infrastructure company Colt Technology services (Colt) has announced that is has completed the acquisition of Lumen Technologies’ Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) business for $2.8 billion.  

The deal, which is still subject to regulatory approval, encompasses Lumen’s terrestrial and subsea networks, data centres and other network equipment in the EMEA region. 

Nokia’s latest AI allows networks to respond to spoken instructions

This week, Nokia Bell Labs have unveiled their latest breakthrough in AI and machine learning, allowing telcos to reconfigure their networks simply by issuing verbal instructions.

Dubbed Natural-Language Networking, the new technology can interpret simple text or speech requests and allocate networking resources accordingly, optimising the network to suit the end user’s specific needs.

Ericsson launches 5G standalone software toolkit

Ericsson has launched a new software toolkit to strengthen 5G Standalone network capabilities and enable premium services with differentiated connectivity. The portfolio enhancement comes as the growth of new use cases and rising mobile user expectations on the quality of 5G experience are putting greater demands on network capacity and performance.

Virgin Media O2 mulls tower sale 

Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) have entered into exclusive talks to sell its stake in joint venture tower unit subsidiary Cornerstone (CTIL) to GLIL infrastructure. Reuters reports that, according to four anonymous sources, the deal could be worth £2.5 billion.

GLIL emerged on top in an auction held earlier this year for a part of VMO2’s 50% stake in the towerco, with sources suggesting a deal could be finalised as early as next week. 

Zegona preparing to take majority stake in Vodafone Spain

Late last month, European telecoms investment firm Zegona Communications confirmed that it had entered negotiations with Vodafone to acquire a full or partial stake in Vodafone Spain. At the time, negotiations were notably in the early stages, with Zegona also in discussions with a consortium of banks to secure funding for the potential purchase.

Now, according to anonymous sources speaking to Bloomberg, negotiations are close to reaching a positive conclusion, with Zegona set to buy a stake of at least 50% in Vodafone Espana.
