Telekom Austria has named chief operating officer Alejandro Plater as its new CEO.
Argentina-born Plater has been with the company for just a few months, having joined from Ericsson in March.
His links with the company clearly stem from the Swedish vendor’s links with Telekom Austria owner America Movil. He served as the vendor’s sales director for Mexico and a key account manager for major customers.
Earlier this year, America Movil CFO and vice chairman Carlos Moreno desc ribed him as "an excellent manager, who has been working very closely with us in Mexico."
His appointment to the CEO role was proposed by both America Movil and the telco’s state-owned shareholder Österreichische Bundes- und Industriebeteiligungen (ÖBIB); the latter took on its current form in March, having previously operated as Österreichische Industrieholding (ÖIAG).
"Today’s decision is a good solution for the further development of Telekom Austria Group and we have set a clear and cost-efficient management board structure," said Wolfgang Ruttenstorfer, Telekom Austria chairman, on Friday.
Plater will take up his new role on 1 August.
His contract will run until March 2018, as per the terms of his COO appointment, with the opportunity for a two-year extension.
Plater and CFO Siegfried Mayrhofer will together function as the company’s management board.
Plater fills the role left vacant by Hannes Ametsreiter, who resigned as Telekom Austria CEO in June after six years. He was subsequently named as the new chief executive of Vodafone Germany.
