Telus has announced plans to invest C$1 billion (€677.7 million) in a gigabit fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) network in Vancouver.

In a statement late last week, the Canadian telco said it will connect the majority of the city’s 400,000 homes and businesses to the new network over the next five years.

Telus did not say exactly when it will launch commerc ial services, but said that early next year it will begin offering the first residents and businesses speeds of 150 Mbps, which will be ramped up over the coming years.

"Bringing fibre optic infrastructure directly to homes and businesses is a generational investment, and the most significant contribution our organisation can make to propel Canada’s communications infrastructure and ensure its global competitiveness for decades to come," said Telus CEO Darren Entwistle, in a statement on Friday.

Telus said its new fibre network will also form the backbone of its mobile network, resulting in improved capacity.

"The investment being made by Telus today will transform Vancouver into a major hub of today’s best communications infrastructure and connect homes with the fastest Internet connections possible," said Canadian premier Christy Clark.

The network deployment forms part of Telus’ plan to invest C$4 billion in British Columbia through 2018.
