Press Release
Credited for growing WIOCC from an unknown start-up into the organisation responsible for building Africa’s first hyperscale network infrastructure, WIOCC CEO Chris Wood has been named in the prestigious 2020 Power 100 listing of the 100 most influential people in the wholesale carrier community.
Chris has been instrumental in the transformation of the African connectivity landscape and has built WIOCC into the leading player in the deployment of carrier-scale, future-proofed network infrastructure into, out of and within Africa.
He has been the driving force behind WIOCC’s hyperscale strategy and the construction and extension of Africa’s first, truly hyperscale network infrastructure. New players in African markets are increasingly looking to purchase the high-performance and scalable, international infrastructure needed for the efficient and reliable delivery of their bandwidth-hungry content. WIOCC’s hyperscale infrastructure has therefore been critical in maintaining its ability to compete – delivering dynamic and ever-expanding connectivity solutions that now are typically measured in multiples of 100Gbps, and often on more than one route for diversity.
As well as overseeing a greater than 100% increase in the size of WIOCC’s workforce in the last five years, the last three years has also seen a doubling of staff in WIOCC’s Nairobi-based Network Operations Centre (NOC) – which looks after WIOCC’s unique network.
To support the current needs and projected future requirements of WIOCC’s clients, Chris has established and grown WIOCC’s presence in the key bridgehead markets of South Africa and Nigeria.
In South Africa, he has built a local WIOCC team that staffs a back-up NOC and includes commercial, operations, engineering, programme management, business development and office administration skill sets.
More recently, Chris has established a WIOCC presence in Nigeria, where it now has locally-recruited, dedicated Commercial and Programme Management functions.
