Japanese mobile users have the overall highest quality of experience whenever they have a signal on their chosen provider. This is according to the first annual Tutela Global Mobile Experience Report, published today, which found that Japan’s networks met Tutela’s thresholds representative of activities like 1080p video streaming, HD group video calls, multiplayer online mobile gaming and more, 90.5% of the time. Meanwhile, the individual best operator was LG U+ in South Korea, which met those same thresholds 93.1% of the time.
At a time where operators are focused on deploying the first iteration of 5G networks, Tutela’s report looks at networks as users currently experience them – overwhelmingly, with 3G and 4G connections. Other key findings from the report include:
Norway (which came second for Excellent Consistent Quality by just 0.1%) came top for Core Consistent Quality, which is representative of less demanding day-to-day uses like standard-definition video streaming, VOIP calls, and sharing images on social media. Telenor in Norway delivered the highest Core Consistent Quality out of all networks globally and came in second for Excellent Consistent Quality by just 1.2%.
While European countries dominate the ranking table for both Excellent and Core Consistent Quality, Oceania achieved the highest overall Excellent and Core Consistent Quality when averaging across continents.
More than a third of countries tested delivered a Core Consistent Quality above 90%. However, just two countries delivered an Excellent Consistent Quality percentage over 90%. This indicates that while basic connectivity is becoming more widespread, there is a clear need for the extra capacity offered by 5G to enable the next generation of mobile use cases.
Tom Luke, VP at Tutela, commented: “It’s incredibly encouraging seeing that, around the world, mobile internet quality is approaching a point where people in many countries can almost always use social media or stream video – albeit in standard definition – whenever they have a signal. However, the results also note just how difficult it is to ensure an “Excellent” experience for users. The challenge for many operators now will be finding the right way to improve their current networks — including using the incredible potential of 5G — to help meet the needs of subscribers both now and in the future. We are already seeing the growing importance of HD video, with 1080p smartphone screens now being the most common according to DeviceAtlas and new devices like the iPhone 11 making HD viewing the expectation for many. As other high intensity uses grow in popularity, meeting these higher levels of network quality and consistency will be ever more important for delighting mobile users in an increasingly competitive industry.”
The Tutela report is based on over 170 million speed tests from more than 60 million unique iOS and Android devices in the three months between 1st May 2019 and 1st August 2019.
