Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has launched a consultation into the possibility of a free Wi-Fi network across London. The consultation is currently being carried out by telecoms and digital infrastructure specialists such as the Wireless Broadband Alliance, London borough authorities, and other international cities that have already completed similar projects.

SpaceX begins launching next-gen satellites for direct-to-mobile services 

This week, Elon Musk’s SpaceX has launched its latest set of Starlink satellites, some of which have have direct-to-mobile capabilities into orbit. The Starlink low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites were launched by SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, which carried them into orbit on Tuesday evening from California.

Iliad’s Xavier Niel shows interest in Altice Portugal 

Billionaire Xavier Niel, who owns French telco Iliad, has expressed an interested in purchasing Altice Portugal, according to a report from Bloomberg . Altice Portugal, which is part of Altice Group and serves customers using the brand name Meo, is owned by French billionaire Patrick Drahi, who indicated his intention to sell the unit in summer last year.

Are “lazy” broadband engineers to blame for UK cyber-attacks? 

A report from the Telegraph suggests that UK hospitals and banks are more likely to be exposed to cyber-attacks because of “lazy” broadband engineers failing to complete paperwork. According to the article, the engineers are failing to disclose “when and where they are working on BT’s network”, leaving BT’s client companies unable to see who is accessing their critical network infrastructure.

UK altnets Freedom Fibre and VX Fibre agree merger 

UK altnets Freedom Fibre and VX Fibre, which is backed by infrastructure manager InfraBridge have signed an agreement this week to merge their businesses. The newly combined group will operate as name Freedom Fibre under their CEO Neil McArthur and his management team, and will have a network of 285,000 premises.
